“Let Food Be Thy Medicine, and Medicine Be Thy Food”

This quote is attributed to Hippocrates- 431 B.C.  Both simple and succinct it resonated with me the first time I heard it. However, it wasn’t until after I became a nurse in 2008 and began working with patients that I truly understood it.

I’ve care for patients with ailments ranging from acute to terminal, and what I’ve seen has made me wonder if I’d spent way too much money on the textbooks I was assigned (the answer many times- yes). The reason I felt this way was because instead of making patients better it seemed sometimes the treatments we were taught to administer made patients worse. The reason, I believe, is that medication as treatment has become a first choice solution- at least in Western medicine. Well, I believe there’s a better way.

It may not work for all but my suggestion whenever possible is for patients to get honest. Get honest about what habits they may have that may be creating an environment that is making them sicker than they have to be. It takes some research, trial and error, to find the right balance for each person but it is necessary to come up with the best plan of care.

Also I recommend finding the right team.  If you are needing treatment of some kind, you need to have a good line of communication open between you and your providers to address your needs. I know it sounds like a lot of work but hey, I’m not going to lie, good health is not always quick and easy. Besides if you’re going to invest your time in something believe me this is the way to go! After all Health is Wealth!

I’d love to hear from you and your experiences in healthcare both good and bad so leave a note below if you’d like. Also check out some of the great sites below. Hopefully they may assist you on beginning your healthcare journey, or validating the journey you’ve already begun:
